Which Broward high school athlete should be the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week? (Feb. 19)

Broward County’s top athletes continue to impress as the winter sports playoffs reached their respective regional championship rounds. This week, we continue a weekly feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in Broward County high school sports. Below is a look at the five candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Feb. 23, around 10 p.m.

You may vote as often as you like until then. Here are the candidates from last week’s events:

▪ Sami Villaverde, American Heritage, girls’ soccer: Villaverde scored four goals to lead the Patriots to their first state final in four years with a 6-0 win over Wesley Chapel Cypress Creek. Villaverde also scored the lone goal on a penalty kick to beat Archbishop McCarthy in the regional final.

▪ Rafael Guerra, NSU University School, boys’ soccer: Guerra scored a combined five goals in each of the Sharks’ wins over Miami La Salle and Jacksonville Bolles to propel them to the Class 3A state final.

▪ Jeremy Elyzee, Pines Charter, boys’ basketball: Elyzee scored 18 points to lead the Jaguars to a 48-28 win over South Plantation in a Region 4-6A quarterfinal.

▪ Konstantina Mantziori, Cardinal Gibbons, girls’ basketball: Mantziori led the Chiefs with 21 points in a 65-45 win over North Broward Prep in the Region 4-4A final to help Gibbons secure its first trip to the state final four since 2020.

▪ Jacob Tannenbaum, North Broward Prep, boys’ lacrosse: Tannenbaum scored a combined 13 goals in wins over Boca Raton Olympic Heights and Tavernier Coral Shores.
